Millipedes have around 10,000 specious in the world. They are most common in North America. Millipedes or million legs do not actually have million legs. They are Myriapods that is they have long segmented bodies with short heads and many pairs of legs. Millipedes, unlike centipedes are capable of rolling themselves in to a ball. They have small distributions because they move so slowly. Millipedes are clean creatures and take a lot of time to clean and polish themselves.
Millipedes Identification
Millipedes are elongated, cylindrical shaped body with rush-like group of hairs on the 2nd or 3rd pair of their legs. Millipede eyes consist of a number of simple flat lens ocelli arranged in a group on the front/side of the head. They have poor eyesight and use antenna to sense their way. They have sensory organs that they use to measure the humidity in the surroundings.
Millipedes Habitat
Millipedes are beneficial in helping to break to dead plant matter. Millipedes prefer moist areas and feed on decaying leaves and wood and other moist decaying plant matter. Millipedes are harmful as it causes damage to the fruits in contact with the ground such as sprouting seeds, seedlings, strawberries and other ripening fruits. Millipedes die off if weather is inappropriate. They can go high up on the hills in the search of food, if the food at ground becomes too dry or too wet.
Millipedes Life Cycle
Millipedes can live for a long time. The female millipede lays eggs and covers it under the soil surface. The adult millipedes protect these eggs. The young ones and the adult ones look similar; the young one is small in size and has a small body. Their maturity period is 2 to 5 years and continues to live for several years thereafter.
Millipedes Prevention

Preparation Guidelines for a Millipedes Treatment
- Vacuum rugs, carpet and upholstered furniture and throw the vacuum bag immediately on completion.
- All unwashed wool, fiber clothing should be washed or place it in a hot dryer for one hour.
- Remove the furniture from the edges of rooms and clear the closet floors and shelves
- Vacate the areas.
- Do not enter in the areas during treatment and after for minimum of 4 hours or until the product dries.
- After re-entry if possible open windows and doors for about 20 minutes.
- Pregnant women, infants and people suffering from heart, kidney, and other such major ailments should consult doctor before service and if possible avoid the areas for at least 24 hours.
